Electroacupuncture (EA) is acupuncture enhanced with the application of a low-frequency electrical current through the inserted needles. A small, precision device connects to pairs of needles and delivers a controlled, pulsed electrical stimulus — amplifying and extending the therapeutic effect of needle stimulation alone.
Developed in China in the 1950s, EA is now one of the most extensively researched modalities in evidence-based acupuncture practice. Different electrical frequencies activate different neurochemical pathways: 2Hz for endorphin release; 100Hz for dynorphin and serotonin; 2/100Hz alternating for the broadest analgesic effect.
