Cupping Therapy —
Decompression for Deep Healing
A Traditional Chinese Medicine technique using suction cups to release myofascial tension, improve circulation, and treat pain, stress, and respiratory conditions.
What Is Cupping Therapy
Ancient suction therapy.
Modern muscle recovery.
Cupping therapy is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique in which glass, silicone, or bamboo cups are applied to the skin using suction to lift the fascia, mobilize stagnant blood and lymph, and stimulate the flow of Qi through the meridians. Dating back over 2,000 years in TCM, cupping gained widespread global recognition following its visibility at the 2016 Olympics.
How Cupping Works
Suction, not pressure.
The inverse of massage.
Releases Qi stagnation
and Blood stasis
The negative pressure created by the cup draws blood and lymphatic fluid to the surface, increasing microcirculation, releasing myofascial restrictions, and triggering an anti-inflammatory response.
Types offered at Balancepoint: Static cupping (cups left 5–15 min), Sliding cupping (cups moved across the back with oil), Flash cupping (rapid repeated placement for acute respiratory conditions).
Not bruises —
a diagnostic sign
The circular marks left after cupping are not bruises. They are petechiae — extravasated blood rising to the surface — indicating areas of stagnation. Dark marks indicate higher stagnation; lighter marks indicate good circulation. They fade in 3–7 days and are painless.
“Cupping therapy significantly reduces pain in patients with chronic neck and back pain, with effects comparable to conventional physiotherapy at 3-month follow-up.”
